Rio Grande Valley Celtic Festival

about_usStrongman athletics has been in New Mexico for about a decade now. (This sport is the same one that can be seen on The World’s Strongest Man television show.) We operate through an amateur organization known as the North American Strongman (NAS), an organization whose members include many of the American professionals you can see on the TV show. One notable strongman athlete who has competed here in New Mexico is Brian Shaw, who last year qualified and competed in the World’s Strongest Man contest. New Mexico typically has two to three events per year-one or two in Albuquerque and one in Farmington. This year there will be a contest in Las Cruces as well. Each contest showcases several different events, which can vary greatly from one contest to the next, including traditional events such as the Atlas Stones, Truck Pull, Log Press and Tire Flip. The newer events are a DB overhead press, Frame Carry and Yoke Walk. These contests are categorized by weight class, so we can create a more level playing ground for these athletes. (Typically, anyone under 231 pounds is considered a lightweight competitor and anyone over 231 is considered a heavyweight competitor.) We also have women, teen, and master divisions, which are also divided up by bodyweight. Many of the competitors here in New Mexico live right here in the Albuquerque area. Some just like the idea of competing, while others have big dreams and aspirations within the sport. One thing is for sure though: We all love to lift and lift heavy!
